Prop 37 Ad Wars: Monsanto's $ vs. The Truth About GMOs

According to the latest Los Angeles Times poll, California supporters of Prop 37 – the November 6th ballot initiative that will mandate labeling for genetically engineered food – outnumber our foes almost three to one.

We're going to have to fight hard to hold onto this lead.

Opponents of our Right to Know – Monsanto, DuPont and their allies – are currently outspending us seven to one, and we expect that margin to grow to ten to one before election day. Big Food Inc. and the Biotech Bullies have $35 million to spend on TV ads, and they're already bombing the airwaves.

We're not raising enough money to get our ads on TV as often as theirs, but we've got something else they don't.

The truth!

And people like you.

If you share our Right to Know TV ads with your friends, the videos are sure to go viral.

Also, please sign up to volunteer for the campaign – you don't have to be in California to contact the state's voters via phone, email or social media.

Whole Foods — Stop the Greenwashing!

It took them months, but Whole Foods Market finally endorsed Prop 37, the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act.

Or did they?

On closer look, the endorsement appeared to serve more to confuse consumers and discredit Prop 37, than it did to rally support for the most critical food policy fight to come down the pike in decades.

And financial support? From the most successful organic foods retailer and its multi-millionaire executives? Nuthin'.

Here's What We're Up Against – And Here's How You Can Help

Californians turning on their TVs this week were met by $35 million worth of ads – paid for by Monsanto and other pesticide and junk food manufacturers – intended to frighten and confuse them about Prop 37, the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act.

Case in point: The opposition trotted out Dr. Henry Miller, a long-term cheerleader for the biotech industry, and an opponent of safety testing of GMO foods. Miller is senior research fellow at the Hoover Institution, a conservative think tank. For 15 years he worked for the FDA, where he founded the FDA Office of Biotechnology.

Miller also was a key supporter of The Advancement of Sound Science Coalition, the European junk science front group funded by tobacco giant Philip Morris.

Miller has a string of fancy letters after his name, wears a suit, and looks and sounds like the typical voice of authority, trying to convince voters that Prop 37 is a ploy by "special interest" groups instead of what it really is – a grassroots, citizens initiative designed to give consumers the same basic right to know what's in their food that citizens in nearly 50 other countries already have.

Could a guy like Miller talk voters out of voting YES on 37? Not if we can get our message out to voters – but we have to get it out often enough, and in the right places.

Please help us counter the lies by donating today. Thank you!

Scientists Defend Study Showing Monsanto's GMOs & Pesticides Make Rats Grow Tumors

A new peer-reviewed research paper by the French group of Gilles-Eric Seralini reveals devastating effects on rats fed diets containing genetically modified corn, with and without the herbicide Roundup, as well as Roundup alone. Seralini's study extends the work of others, which have demonstrated the toxicity and/or endocrine-based impacts of Roundup. This peer-reviewed study has been criticized by a group of indentured scientists whose views have been widely reported in the popular press.

But a growing number of independent scientists are defending Seralini, with the following warning:

"When those with a vested interest attempt to sow unreasonable doubt around inconvenient results, or when governments exploit political opportunities by picking and choosing from scientific evidence, they jeopardize public confidence in scientific methods and institutions, and also put their own citizenry at risk."

With the news that lifetime feeding studies show that Monsanto's herbicide RoundUp and genetically engineered RoundUp Ready crops cause deadly cancer in rats, Russia, France, India and other countries are considering bans. Please read the scientists' entire statement, then send a letter to U.S. regulators urging them to review the new evidence as well.

Illegal GMO Vaccines in Organic

Last week, we alerted you to the problem of synthetic nutrients in organic baby food. This week, while preparing to present public comments at the National Organic Standards Board meeting, October 15-18 in Providence, RI, we learned that the NOSB will also be taking on the issue of illegal GMO vaccines in organic.

Like synthetics, GMO vaccines are prohibited in organic without special permission. However, since the Bush Administration, the National Organic Program has acknowledged that even though no GMO vaccine has ever been approved for use in organic, most vaccines are GMO and are not labeled, thus many GMO vaccines are being used in organic illegally.

The USDA's National Organic Program (NOP) has created a working group to address the problem and the new group will present an update of its progress at the Providence meeting.

Natural Products Shouldn't Be GMO!

It's not a radical idea. Most consumers think natural means non-GMO. Shockingly, the Natural Products Association disagrees. They've even come out against Prop 37, the California ballot initiative for our right to know about GMOs!

Now, their Facebook page is on fire with comments like this one:

"Say YES on Prop 37! Otherwise you are creating massive CONSUMER FRAUD."

If you think natural should mean GMO-free, let NPA know what you think.

No More RoundUp Ready GMO Crops!

Monsanto's RoundUp Pesticide Causes Birth Defects

Take Action!

Five of the twelve new GMO crops that agro-chemical companies Monsanto, Dow, Bayer, and BASF have submitted for approval from the US Department of Agriculture are genetically engineered with a soil bacteria that keeps them alive, even when they're sprayed with massive doses of the herbicide RoundUp. More of these so-called "RoundUp Ready" crops means more RoundUp sprayed on our food. This is horrible because Monsanto's RoundUp causes birth defects. Instead of "RoundUp Ready" we should call these GMOs "Birth-Defect Ready"!

According to a report published by Earth Open Source, industry's own studies - including one commissioned by Monsanto - showed that as long ago as the 1980's that RoundUp's active ingredient, glyphosate, causes birth defects in laboratory animals.

We have until September 11th to urge the USDA to block these new Birth-Defect Ready GMO crops.

On Our Way to 200,000 Names . . . and Michelle Obama's Desk!

"This is the biggest fraud being perpetrated on the public health since tobacco and we need transparency on it urgently." – Gregg, from Mead, CO.

Two weeks after the launch of our petition asking Michelle Obama to remind the President to honor his campaign promise to label GMOs, more than 70,000 people from all over the world have signed on. Many of the signers have included comments, like the one above from Gregg in Mead, CO – a good sign that people understand the importance of labeling, and the importance of passing this historic initiative in California.

We need 200,000 signatures to be able to hand-deliver this petition to Mrs. Obama's staff – and when we do, we'll arrange for the media to be there so we can generate awareness and support for Prop 37, this country's first GMO labeling law.

If you think President Obama should honor his campaign promise to label GMOs, please add your signature today! Thank you!

Your Donation Could Mean 'YES' for GMO Labeling!

In less than two months, Californians will decide whether or not their state will adopt the nation's first mandatory GMO labeling law – a decision that will have a huge impact on the future of GMO labeling in the US, and the very future of our food.

Will they vote YES on Prop 37? Or NO? While polls show that more than 70% of California voters believe genetically modified ingredients should be labeled, we also know that Monsanto, Dow, Pepsi, Coca-Cola and others have raised more than $25 million to convince the state's voters that labeling is a bad idea.

Right now, there are thousands of volunteers on the ground in California distributing leaflets, speaking at events, and writing letters to the editor in an effort to educate people who haven't heard of Prop 37 and don't know that more than 75% of the processed foods they buy contain genetically engineered ingredients. California is a big state. We need many more people, and a lot more materials to reach California voters, educating them on the dangers of GMOs, and get them to the polls in order to pass this law.

You can help! Please pitch in today, and please let your family and friends know how critical it is – for all of us – that we win this battle in California. Your donation could mean another vote for GMO labeling. Thank you!

Dear Linda,

From our friends at Occupy Monsanto...

"According to Fortune's "Inside the secret world of Trader Joe's" article from 2010, Trader GMOs private label brands are made by companies who regularly use GMOs in their products. We also know that TJ's parent company, Aldi, uses GMO ingredients in their low-cost food products throughout America.

"Trader Joe's does not have any sort of standard or system in place, nor does it perform any testing for GMOs."

Stop Monsanto's Sneak Attack!

As we reported last week, a controversial rider has been attached to the U.S. House of Representative's 2013 Agriculture Appropriations bill that would make it impossible for organic and non-GMO consumers and farmers to fight Monsanto in court (as we did on GMO alfalfa and sugar beets) when the US Department of Agriculture illegally approves new genetically engineered crops that could, as the courts have ruled, eliminate "a farmer's choice to grow non-genetically engineered crops, or a consumer's choice to eat non-genetically engineered food."

The vote we expected last week has been delayed until after the July 4th recess. Already, more than 15,000 of you have taken action, along with over 50,000 of our allies in other organizations. Please join together as we raise our voices loud and clear.

There's still time to stop Monsanto's sneak attack!

Who's Monsanto's Best Friend in Congress?

Tom Philpott reported this week in Mother Jones that Jack Kingston (R-GA) is the Congressman responsible for inserting this "pro-industry provision that that has nothing to do with agriculture appropriations."

Kingston had already established himself as a friend of the industry. In April, the Biotechnology Industry Organization, whose members include ag-biotech giants Monsanto and DuPont, named him its "legislator of the year for 2011-2012." BIO declared Kingston a "champion of America's biotechnology industry" who has "helped to protect funding for programs essential to the survival of biotechnology companies across the United States."

Are there any Members of Congress tough enough to stand up to Monsanto?

Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) will sponsor an amendment to the ag appropriations bill that would nullify Kingston's Monsanto-friendly provision.

Ask your Member of Congress to support the DeFazio amendment!

Worth Fighting For? Your Donation Keeps the Fight Alive

"It is horrifying that we have to fight our own government to save the environment." - Ansel Adams

The photographer Ansel Adams had a keen eye for nature's beauty – and a keen sense of how our government was allowing its slow destruction.

It is horrifying that we have to fight our own government to save the environment. But we do. These past few weeks the OCA has been educating and mobilizing our members – and anyone else who will listen – on the many threats to our environment that are contained in the latest Farm Bill and, now, the agricultural appropriations bill, which contains an amendment that has been renamed the "Monsanto Protection Act."

Our staff has worked relentlessly to create and circulate action alerts and petitions, spread the word on our social media networks, and provide the most up-to-date information on our website.

We believe the environment is worth fighting for. But we need your help to do this important work. Please donate today to continue funding the fight for the environment. Thank you!

Health Care Decision a Death Blow to Single-Payer

Last week, news broke on the Supreme Court's decision on the Affordable Care Act just as we were sending out our newsletter. We decided to wait on some commentary from OCA allies. Author Raj Patel's take on the decision pretty much sums it up:

"Now that the insurance industry knows it'll have a multi-billion-dollar market of mandatory customers, the industry won't have to spend all that money to buy a different political decision, and it never has to worry about single-payer health care again. And that's the tragedy of the debate around the health-care plan. In all the noise around this ruling, we can't hear the voices demanding a cheaper, better system that dispenses with insurance corporations. The U.S. already spends more per capita than any other country for worse care. The ruling entrenches a bad system. The media circus drowns out discussion of a better one."

OCA's ally, the Alliance for Natural Health, has written an excellent overview of what the decision means for integrative medicine.

Another OCA ally, Mike Adams, of Natural News, weighs in here.

Get Antibiotic Residues Out of the U.S Food Supply!

When the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released new guidelines in April on the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture, they had the opportunity to take long overdue steps to end the overuse of these drugs in the feed and water of animals that are not sick. Unfortunately, they missed that opportunity. The FDA guidance speaks of "judicious use," yet does not restrict the everyday use of antibiotics to prevent — not treat — animal disease, a common practice employed by CAFOs (confined animal feeding operations) to compensate for overcrowded, unsanitary conditions. And although the FDA has spoken out against the sale of antibiotics for growth promotion, the approach they laid out to end this practice is completely voluntary and lacking in transparency. The use of antibiotics are banned in organic agriculture, which is one of the reasons why millions of Americans are shunning factory farmed meat, eggs, and dairy products and turning to organic products instead.

The good news is that it's not too late for the FDA to try again. The FDA is accepting public comments on these guidelines until July 12th, and we plan to send them thousands of letters from OCA members. Join us in urging Dr. Hamburg, the FDA Commissioner, to get dangerous antibiotic residues out of the U.S. food supply.

Together, we'll let the FDA know that we expect better from them.

Democracy at Risk in Washington State

Could Spell Disaster for Local Ballot Initiatives

From Paul Cienfuegos:

As many of you already know, there is a movement growing across this country of municipalities and counties exploring more effective ways to protect themselves from unwanted corporate harms, and to roll back corporate constitutional so-called "rights" at the local level. About 150 communities in seven states have already passed such laws.

Over the past five months, residents of Bellingham, WA, have gathered almost 10,000 signatures to successfully place on the ballot this November a legally-binding initiative that would ban coal trains from passing through their city. Unlike the conventional regulatory and zoning laws which municipalities try to pass, and which are always struck down as violating corporate "rights", this new rights-based approach is much more complicated to challenge, and is therefore a much greater threat to those in government and corporations who want to maintain the status quo situation where We The People are powerless to defend our communities.

Last week, the quite liberal city council of Bellingham voted unanimously to file a lawsuit to legally challenge the right of Bellingham residents to even get an opportunity to vote on this initiative in November.

Organizers of the Coal Free Bellingham campaign are outraged that their own City Council would have the gall to pre-empt local residents from exercising their right to govern themselves at the local level. They are calling on people throughout the country to stand up for the right of Bellingham voters, and asking YOU to contact the Bellingham City Council ASAP and tell them to let the voters have their say.
